How To Choose Your...
Construction Team Captain

You and your mate must unite to form your...

Construction Team Captain”.

When building a new home, all decisions should be made together to benefit one another. Stick to this rule like glue and be willing to compromise when necessary to maintain a healthy relationship.

The first duty as construction team Captain is to divide up the roles that best suit you and your mate's strengths. I know...

...first I tell you to unite, then I tell you to divide. But keep listening. There is a good explanation in the following section:

Define Your Roles

In order that the planning and building stages of your home remain productive and enjoyable, both you and your mate will need take on the roles that best suit your strengths, skills and time to perform them.

The following roles that either you and your mate may take on as your construction team captain includes, but are not limited to:

Financial Planner, Decorator, Designer, Researcher,

Bargain Hunter/Buyer, Bid Submitter, Organizer,

Scheduler, Mediator, Negotiator, Job Supervisor,

Bill Payer, Record Keeper...and the list goes on.

While planning and performing your specific duties...

...schedule little pow-wows with your mate to discuss and finalize decisions.

Just remember, your mate may only be great at making the crust and you at the filling but together...

... you make one terrific pie!

Our Personal Story:

My husband's strength is in his financial education—

where mine is in decorating and design,

I love to bargain hunt--he doesn't have the time,

My husband is great at record keeping—I'm great at paying the bills,

I love to organize—he's happy to just put things in a pile.

Now, guess who played what role?

One of the most difficult decisions we made as "Construction Team Captain" was paint color:

"I wanted to paint the living room in aged rag-rolled yellow and my husband wanted plain old white.

We compromised and came up with "sailcloth" (creamy off-white).

My husband was happy because he was afraid to commit to a permanent color on the walls until we had lived in our home for awhile.

I was happy for a nice neutral color that would enable me to decorate with any other color I wished, plus when the time comes for rag-rolling the aged yellow—sailcloth is already a great base color.

So, until then, I incorporated yellows, blues, greens, and reds in various shades, textures and designs, that we both loved, into our furniture and accessories to get the “feel” we desired.

The end result was great!"

As you can see in the first part of our story, we chose our roles based on where our strengths lie. Then...

...when it was time for us to make the final decision of choosing a wall color—one that affected the outcome of "our home—we came together as one "Construction Team Captain".

The Owner-Builder

"Owner-Builder" are individuals who prefer to take an active role in the building process of their own home. They may choose to take on the General Contractor's role, or get more involved in the physical building process.

Taking on the role of "Owner-Builder" is not for everyone. If both you and your mate are working at a full time job of at least 40 hours a week, don't expect to have enough time to oversee all the activities of the building process.

It takes a great deal of the following attributes to pull this off successfully:

        • Time

        • Commitment

        • Communication Skills

        • Team-Work

        • Leadership Skills

        • Organizational Skills

        • In-depth knowledge of proper construction materials, methods, and phases—you need to know more than just the basics of building a home.

        • Hands-on Experience

If you lack just one of the attributes listed above, it is "Wise" to seek guidance and skills from the appropriate source.
