Country
French house plans with Country French interior décor
are currently one of the most popular choices
for home styles, and I can see why. It wasn't that long ago when I
was taking in the lucious aroma of the orange trees near the
beautiful medieval village of Saint
Paul de Vence.
Located
in south east France, this quiet little village gave me the feeling
of serenity and ease. Its narrow cobblestone streets lined with
simple but captivating architecture filled with delicious cafés,
beautiful boutiques, and fabulous art galleries made me never want to
leave.
The
surrounding maisons (homes) were simple, but captivating even more.
The exterior walls had a lime washed "stucco" appearance,
with windows that offered functioning shutters and beautiful flower
boxes. The roofs were of clay tile and the entrances welcomed you
through their colorful arched doorways.
The
old Provençal Farm House my husband and I stayed, Hotel Les
Orangers, was a true specimen what American designers often portray
"French Country" to be.
Inviting
and enchanting, the French Country architecture was embraced with an
over-sized limestone fireplace, cut stone floors, rough hewn ceiling
beams, and French Doors flanked by shutters that opened out
onto a beautiful verandah where breakfast and lunch was often served.
Old
color washed looking walls and decorative fabrics were offered in
natural warm hues of golden yellows with terracottas accents
accompanied by soft greens, and gentle blues in its traditional
Provençal (rustic) farm house atmosphere.
Had
the farmhouse been decorated with a more casual French Country
presentation the colors would have more vibrant in yellows, reds, and
blues and perhaps, grassy greens.
A
copper kettle filled with fresh lemons (leaves and all) made a
beautiful statement next to a tall display of blue, white, and orange
delicate flowers. The addition of a Country French lamp in front of a
Louis XVI style giltwood wall mirror perfectly completed the entire
entry table scape.
Most
importantly, we learned from our visit, County French is not just a
home style or an interior décor-it is the tranquil ambiance
that the entire lifestyle induces. The lifestyle of the French
Country folk is never hurried, it is savored. Dining is a
celebration of food, friends, and family. Living is an art.
Although
it was impossible for us to stay, my husband and I desperately wanted
to take it all home with us. If Country French is your style, you
have made a wonderful choice.

Country Furniture and Accessories
The
fresh and opulent interiors of Country French and Provençal
homes are often filled with furniture and accessory pieces that look
as if they could tell a story. Some of these handcrafted
pieces are simple and reveal delicately
worn imperfections from years of affectionate use. Other pieces have
intricate carvings and may depict painted scenes of the French
Countryside, which are quite literally pieces of art.
French
Country furniture finishes aren't
always painted, but sometimes stained medium to deeper tones to match
the woodwork throughout the home. It is also common to find mixed and
matched period furnishings
including those inspired in the Louis XV to Louis XVIII, Napoleonic
and French Renaissance eras.
Select
furniture and accessory pieces that appear as if they could have been
handed down from generation to
generation. In doing so, your new French Country home will be warm
and welcoming to anyone who walks through your door! To find
affordable quality French Country furniture...check it out!
Dining
al fresco (outdoors) is often a daily affair for the local residents
of the French Countryside. We've found another great resource for
affordable pieces that will look
quite astonishing inside and outside your new Country French style
home!

French Fabrics and Wallpaper
There
are a number of different fabric solids, stripes, patterns, and
textures you can use to decorate your French Country home.
Damask
-
used in a more formal setting, this fabric style can be used for
table linens, upholstery, window treatments and bedding.
Jacobean
Crewel Work Upholstery - Linen
backgound fabric embroidered with a semi-heavy wool crewel work
designed in a "tree of life" motif from the Renaissance
period. Originally hand crafted in England, this ulpholstery
techniuqe became quite popular in France and works beautifully on
Louis XVII style arm chairs. It's often difficult to find and
expensive, but if you are handy with a needle you can
create
your own Jacobean
masterpiece.
Lace
- used for generations, it is quite
popular to use lace table and window treatments to accent other
fabrics in French Country décor.
Matlessé
(means cushioned in French)
coverlets and Pillow Shams are often used in a Country French
bedroom. These beautiful works are actually double woven to appear
as if one thick piece of fabric has been tightly quilted leaving a
puckered effect.
Provencal
Fabrics
- are often bright and colorful, which
are usually offered in vibrant primary colors of yellows, reds,
blues and greens. The patterns vary, but almost always contain some
type of small floral motif.
Stripes
-
can vary in many widths color combinations. However, stripes of
terracottas, warm golden tones, and greens traditionally adorn the
windows and doors of a Country French home. Floral motifs are also
incorporated with striped fabrics and used for drapery and
bedspreads.
Toile
(pronounced
'twäl) or specifically - "Toile de Jouy" - is a
Country French linen, cotton or silk cloth, from middle France
printed with a single color that depicts an 18th century
French scene.
